Blog Takeover: A Letter from Robert Kovner

    Monday, March 10th, 2008

    Hi folks!

I am running around on a Manic Monday tear…Lt. Kovner, my wonderful NETHERWOOD hero, has offered to hijack my blog today! LOL

Here’s a letter he wrote recently for people who subscribe to Romance Designs.  Have a great Monday!

     Michele

    Dear Reader,

I have hacked into your computer to send you this message at great personal risk.  Time is short.  The Singularity is near….I know it is hard to believe, but computers are on the verge of becoming more intelligent than any human being.  And this advent of sentient computers is not the utopia that your best and brightest thinkers would have you believe.

My name is Lt. Robert Kovner.  I’m a veteran of the Glass Desert wars, and now I’m posted to Fresh Havens, a corporate colony of intergalactic FortuneCorp.  But I have a secret identity, a secret life.  In cyberspace, I’m known as the Avenger.  And I seek the destruction of an evil supermind determined to destroy all of humankind.

I want you to know that you have a soul.

How do I convince you of the dangers?  I know from where you’re reading my letter, I sound crazy.  But prophets usually sound crazy until events prove their visions true.  Have you ever had a dream?  Lived a secret life of the mind?  Imagine that dream place, more real than your daily life.  Imagine that you can escape to that other world with the click of a mouse, with a slow intake of your breath.

My secret world has a name: NETHERWOOD.  And in that place, I have found true love.  Now I have come to you, across time and space, to implore you to heed your own dreams, your own life of the mind.  Your soul is precious, you are so much more than your surface self.  We lose ourselves in the small moments of our lives, the corporate postings, the tests and examinations made from outside.  But take a moment, find yourself again.

    We need you.

In my world, the soul is against the law.  True love something outmoded, impractical, useless.  But love is the most powerful force in the universe.  I know it, and you do too.  So when you are done with my letter, and your ordinary day clamors for you, remember the secret place where your soul finds safe haven, and remember, somewhere love waits for you.  Needs you.  Recognizes your perfection, the implicit beauty of your soul.

When you tire of your surface life, meet me in that secret place, venture into Netherwood.  And you and I, our friends and lovers, will join together and rediscover paradise.

Until we meet there stay strong,

    Kovner

    Six random things about me….

    1.  I used to take dance classes at the Alvin Ailey Dance Company with my friend Francesca when I was in high school…I used to love dancing with such a passion, and still do, though I don’t take dance classes now

    2.  I am a history freak…my favorite comfort reads are biographies and American history

    3.  For somebody who writes about technology, I am not necessarily technology’s friend :)  I tend to break computers, cell phones, email, etc, a LOT.

    4.  My favorite cartoon show is Pinky and the Brain…my nickname was Brain during the original run of that show

    5.  I am an early riser by nature…if you left me to my own devices, I would be up with the sun every morning.  However, I would also have a two hour afternoon nap every day…

    6.  I once lived on nothing but ramen noodles for a week.  Please don’t ever do that if you can help it!

I hereby tag everybody who is reading this post and would like to play — please leave a link to your blog in comments and we’ll come visit.

    Have a great weekend, y’all…

    Blast from the Past

    Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

One of the greatest things about teh interweebs is how it cuts across space and time.  In the last week or so, I’ve gotten emails from old friends I’ve lost touch with, who are spread out around the world.  It’s not a huge flood of contact, but it’s not a tiny trickle either.

A recurring thread in these letters is the need to follow your dreams, make them come true.  Turns out a bunch of my friends write as well, and they’re a talented group.  For example, check out this pretty passage –one of my correspondents, who generously offered to let me quote their email, summed up the quest to transcend time through writing’s alchemy:

For me, writing goes in fits and starts. Over the past 10 years or so I have started several novels (finished none) taken various workshops, scribbled and dreamed. I think it comes from the realiziation that in my head, I’m always living in other worlds. And because I’m a history buff, I’m often dreaming in the past and when I’m walking around a city or a town - whether it’s NYC or somewhere on my travels, I can’t help but think of “ghosts” and imagine the lives and stories of the people who were here before and breathed life into the place. So the writing comes from these strange obsessions but then something wonderful happens: when you’ve actually created something with your words, there’s a joy that can’t be matched.

I don’t think that time is a linear phenomenon…we experience it that way sometimes, but when something really important goes down, something that cuts to the bone, time stretches to fit that huge moment.
